Opacka – Architecture in Harmony with History

Opacka is a unique residential project located by the Oliwa Stream, in the heart of Gdańsk’s historic Oliwa district. The setting of the investment—former Cistercian lands and the vicinity of the Oliwa Cathedral—required a highly conscious architectural approach.

Architecture of Respect and Responsibility

Creating Opacka meant balancing contemporary residential standards with the historical character of the area. The goal was not to replicate past solutions but to find a common architectural language that seamlessly integrates with the surroundings. The buildings reference Oliwa’s traditional development through fragmented forms, sloped roofs, and subtle details that reveal themselves as one moves through the space.

Discovering Space

The inspiration behind the project was the concept of discovering architecture—residents and passersby perceive more details and textures as they approach the buildings. The top floors blend visually with the roofs due to carefully selected colors, reducing the perceived scale of the development and ensuring a harmonious relationship with the surroundings.

Open and Sustainable Spaces

Opacka is designed as an open and inviting place. A walking path along the Oliwa Stream leads to a municipal park, which was created as an integral part of the project. The revitalization process restored two historic Cistercian ponds—one for recreational use and the other serving as a retention basin. Additionally, a recreational area for residents is subtly integrated into the terrain.

Designing for the Community

The development of Opacka exemplifies conscious design that considers the needs of both future residents and the local community. The collaboration between Roark Studio, the investor, and the team designing the municipal park resulted in a space that fosters integration and everyday life surrounded by greenery.
